Apple have announced that they will be releasing 128GB versions of the iPad fourth generation Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi and cellular models which will be available from the 5th February in the USA. Previously the maximum storage available was 64GB. In a move that has been clearly targeted as businesses Apple said:
“iPad continues to have a significant impact on business with virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 currently deploying or testing iPad. Companies regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad.”
At a time when tablet sales are eating into sales of traditional PCs and laptops Apple is keen to cement their dominance of the business of the market. Microsoft are set to release their Surface Pro tablet which has 128 GB storage so it makes sense for Apple to offer the iPad with equivalent storage. What is interesting is that the 128GB model has been announced in the week that there have been leaked pictures purportedly of the iPad 5th generation which shows a slimmer case, similar to that of the iPad mini. It seems unlikely that Apple would release a 4th Gen iPad in February and then release a redesigned model in March (when new models have been traditionally announced.) Therefore the 5th Generation iPad is most likely going to be released in November 2013.
